Current Season

VISIONS

Ensemble Laude is a staple of the Victoria, British Columbian, and Canadian music landscape, known for its innovative and uplifting repertoire. The choir has performed at national and international choral festivals and its seasonal concerts are a highlight of the city’s arts and culture calendar.

Also joining Ensemble Laude this season is Lumina, our new treble youth choir!

Visions, our winter concert, presents beloved works from some of the world’s most celebrated choral composers. Muusika by Part Uusberg, Falcon Carol by Stephen Chatman, and Only in Sleep by Erik Esenvalds pair with Antonio Lotti’s Kyrie, the dynamic Pakkanen by Soila Sariola,, and Kothbiro, arranged for Ensemble Laude by BC composer Alison Girvan. Our director, Elizabeth MacIsaac, has arranged various traditional and medieval pieces for Visions, including All Through the Night. Also featured are traditional Georgian and Gregorian chants, that set the air shimmering with sound.

Come let your heart be uplifted on a cold winter’s night with our songs of love and joy!

Ensemble Laude’s programme entitled “Bloom”, curates joyous music written for upper voices written
by female composers from around the globe and through history, upon the themes of renewal and
blossoming creativity. Our programmes entwine spoken word with song. Our youth choir Lumina shares the stage with Ensemble Laude, our 60 voice women’s choir. With Ensemble Laude, we encompass singers of all ages, orientation and ethnicity into our ensemble and this diversity is reflected in our music selection.
Bloom especially highlights current compositions by Canadian women, including our own director, also a composer, who sets medieval song into new arrangements for us. Music in an astounding multitude of languages celebrates our many origins. Some of the pieces represented include Ensemble Laude commissioned works by Canadians like Albertan composer Georgina Craig (Beyond the Violet Rays). Other Canadians represented are Sarah Quartel, Katerina Gimon, Eleanor Daley and MacIsaac. Programme also includes works by by Ysaye Barnwell(Afro-American, Shireen Abu-Khader
(Palestinian/Jordanian), Faith Morgan (American), Hildegard von Bingen(Germany, Middle Ages) and
Karin Rehnquist(Swedish.)
